Computercraft is seeking Cataloging Librarians to support the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. NLM maintains a preeminent collection of the world’s published medical literature, including books, journal volumes, pamphlets, and theses, printed from the 15th through the early 21st century; manuscripts ranging in date from the 11th century to the present; fine prints, and other graphic materials from the 15th century to the present; and audio and visual materials.

In this role, you will work full-time on site at NLM performing original cataloging, including descriptive cataloging, subject analysis, classification, and other related librarian duties involved in processing complex biomedical literature, including textual, audiovisual, and/or electronic resources, of mixed difficulty.

Job Responsibilities
  • Descriptive Cataloging following the Resource Description and Access (RDA) standard and the BIBCO Standard Record (BSR) or CONSER Standard Record (CSR) as applicable.
  • Prepares name and series authority records for contribution to the Name Authority Cooperative (NACO) program.
  •  Selects appropriate subject headings from the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) vocabulary to express the subject content of the publication.
  • Selects and assigns a classification notation from the NLM Classification for materials in medicine and related sciences, and from the appropriate LC classification schedule for materials in a field other than biomedicine.
  •  Identifying cataloging additions and changes required for previously cataloged material. • Updating existing cataloging records, including bibliographic, holdings, and item records.
  • Following guidelines for specific materials to assure all records created follow NLM policies and appropriate national and international standards.

Required Skills/Experience
  • Three (3) plus years of library and cataloging experience (e.g., use of and familiarity with RDA, MARC21, any library services platform, Cutter Sanborn Tables, etc.)
  • Familiarity and use of a controlled vocabulary to assign subjects and classification to library resources (e.g., LCSH, MeSH, LC Classification, NLM Classification)
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities
  • Ability to obtain Public Trust clearance

Desired Skills/Experience
  • Master’s degree in library science or library & information science from an ALA-accredited college or university • Experience working with fragile materials, possibly in a special collections environment
  • Experience cataloging serials
  • Knowledge of non-English languages (i.e., Latin, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Cyrillic, etc.)
  • Experience with creating cataloging records according to the BIBCO Standard Record (BSR)
  • Experience with creating cataloging serial records according to the CONSER Standard Record (CSR)
  • Experience utilizing the ALMA Library Services Platform and/or OCLC Connexion for cataloging

Compensation and Benefits

The anticipated salary range for this position is $70,000–$90,000 annually. The starting salary within this range will be based on relevant experience, qualifications, and skills.
