Computercraft is seeking a Genomic Data Curator to support the Database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP) at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), part of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland.

Help make human genomics research data accurate, consistent, and reusable. You will apply expertise in human clinical data, high-throughput molecular biology datasets, and quantitative analysis to curate clinical phenotype and multi-omics data submitted to dbGaP. Working with investigators and NCBI colleagues, you will standardize data, resolve inconsistencies, and support responsible sharing through a controlled-access research repository.

This position requires working onsite five days per week at the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland.

Job Responsibilities
  • Review clinical phenotype, genotype, and multi-omics submissions, interpreting study design and metadata to assess completeness, consistency, and scientific context.
  • Review genomic and tabular data formats and identify missing information, inconsistent values, and other data quality issues.
  • Standardize researcher-submitted phenotype data using controlled vocabularies and consistent terminology.
  • Implement quality control protocols to validate data and improve consistency across studies.
  • Use advanced Excel, SQL, Linux/Unix, Python, and R to review, manage, and process large, complex datasets.
  • Apply NIH Genomic Data Sharing policies, informed consent requirements, and data use limitations during curation.
  • Follow controlled-access data management requirements and privacy protections when handling human research data.
  • Collaborate with investigators, researchers, and internal team members to resolve submission questions and data inconsistencies.
  • Document curation decisions, supporting rationale, and data quality findings clearly to support consistent production workflows.
Required Skills/Experience
  • Ph.D. in a biomedical field such as bioinformatics, genetics, data science, epidemiology, or molecular biology.
  • Experience working with human clinical phenotype data and high-throughput molecular biology datasets.
  • Understanding of study design, metadata interpretation, genomic data, and tabular data formats.
  • Advanced Excel proficiency and strong quantitative data analysis skills.
  • Proficiency with SQL databases and Linux/Unix, and the ability to use Python and R to manage and process large datasets.
  • Working knowledge of informed consent, data use limitations, NIH Genomic Data Sharing policies, and controlled-access data privacy requirements.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain data issues and document scientific decisions.
  • Ability to collaborate with a team in a production environment and maintain careful attention to data quality.
  • Ability to obtain public trust clearance.
Desired Skills/Experience
  • Additional experience in human genetics or clinical data analysis.
  • Experience interpreting or applying research data-sharing policies.
  • Experience using NCBI resources, particularly dbGaP.
Who May Be a Good Fit
This role may be a strong fit for a Ph.D.-trained biomedical data scientist, bioinformatician, geneticist, or epidemiologist who enjoys detailed data review, practical analysis, and direct collaboration with research teams. Strong candidates will be comfortable working with both scientific data and the documentation needed for responsible sharing.
